An introduction to Joomla Modules

Most people who start out with Joomla have a hard time figuring out what all this Joomla stuff is.

So I will try to explain some of it as easy as possible, this time.. Joomla Modules.

The Building Blocs of Joomla Output

You might have read about the Components or the Mambots, but what can you do with modules.

First off, Modules are the things that display all of your content on your website, that is ranging from the main content to the menu's and more…

Modules are the parts of Joomla that makes it possible to place the content in your template on the position that is configured in your template.

Now look at this a bit closer, because its easier to understand it form a picture…

Joomla Module positions in a Template

Here you can see what module positions are defined in the Template I use.

In this case I ma just showing you the top positions I used.

Find Joomla Module Position in Template

The template you use for your website probably will have other positions defined.

If you want to check where they are, you might look at the source code, but if there are nicely build for SEO, you need to look at the style sheet (stylesheet.css) as well…

But there is an easier way, already build in with Joomla which will visualize the placement just like above.
Here is how:

– First Login to your administrator panel
– Got menu item "Site" next to the "Home" item.
– Now select "Preview with in-line positions" …..

You can see every positions and its declaration from top to bottom, from banner to debug and everything in between.

Now you can go ahead en publish and unpublish the modules you want in the positions you want.

P.s. don't forget to click on a module it you are looking at the site modules, most of the time there are parameters for the configuration of the module that open on click :-)
